OLD VOTER ID CARDS ARE VALID UNTIL SEPTEMBER 30

Jul 18, 2008

The Electoral Office of Jamaica has extended the validity of the old voter ID Cards until the 30th of September this year. This means that all Voter ID cards, which had an expiry date of December 31, 2007, are now valid until September 30, 2008.

Acting Director of Elections Orrette Fisher today indicated that the extension is to allow electors more time to collect their new ID Cards, while at the same time ensuring that in the interim they are not inconvenienced while conducting businesses with financial institutions and some public sector entities which require the ID cards.

This is the second time that the EOJ has extended the expiry date of the ID Cards. In January this year the EOJ had given electors a six-month extension timeline. This timeline has now been lengthened.

“All financial institutions and relevant public sector entities are being advised by the EOJ that the old ID cards are still valid and will expire on September 30.” Mr. Fisher explains. “The new ID Cards are ready and we encourage you to collect them at your EOJ Constituency Offices, as soon as possible.”

Up to the 13th of July, some 331, 764 electors had collected the new ID Cards. The Acting Director of Elections pointed out that the EOJ would like to complete the distribution of the new ID Cards by the end of September.

To facilitate the distribution process in the early stages, the Constituency Offices in all parishes have extended their opening hours. The new opening hours are: Monday to Friday 8:30am to 7pm, Saturday 9am to 4pm and Sunday 10am to 3pm.

Some electors may be required to retake photos and fingerprints, when they visit the EOJ Constituency Offices. The EOJ is reminding persons that no payment is required for the new ID Cards. Persons who were not re-verified and have expired ID Cards, will have to re-register in order to receive the new ID cards.
