MICHAEL LEE-CHIN ADDS ANOTHER HONORARY DEGREE TO HIS MANTEL
Oct 17, 2008October 17, 2008, Kingston, Jamaica - Jamaican/Canadian businessman and philanthropist Michael Lee-Chin, will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree for his significant achievements in business and philanthropy from the Wilfrid Laurier University School of Business & Economics on October 31 in Waterloo, Canada.
Mr. Lee-Chin’s alma mater, McMasters University, Canada and the Northern Caribbean University, Manchester, Jamaica, have both conferred him with honorary degrees. Recognised by Time Magazine in 2005 as a Canadian Hero, Mr. Lee Chin will also step up to the podium on National Hero's Day, to receive the Order of Jamaica conferred on him by the government of Jamaica.
Born in Port Antonio, Jamaica, Lee-Chin migrated to Canada and trained as a civil engineer at McMaster University, graduating in 1974. He acquired the Kitchener-based mutual fund company Advantage Investment Council in 1987. Now renamed as AIC Ltd., the internationally renowned organization provided the foundation for Lee-Chin’s business success and fueled his philanthropic contributions to arts, culture and education in Canada, Jamaica and the Caribbean.
Recent philanthropic contributions include a $30-million gift to the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto that resulted in significant renovations and the construction of a new wing. Lee-Chin also donated over $250 M to construct and equip the Northern Caribbean University’s Hyacinth Chen Nursing School, which opened in August 2008.
Mr. Lee-Chin's investments in Jamaica include telecommunications, real estate, healthcare, and financial services.
